Gary H. Smith has been practicing law for over 20 years. His practice handles property tax appeals and related legal matters for both commercial and residential properties. These include office and apartment buildings, businesses and industrial properties, condominiums, cooperatives and single-family homes. Gary has saved his clients millions of dollars in tax savings by appealing successfully the proposed assessments of hundreds of properties.
Since forming his own private practice, Gary's firm has been dedicated himself to ensuring that assessed valuations of residences and businesses are fair. Through Gary's services, clients use the property tax appeals process to reduce their taxes. Every year Gary represents hundreds of clients to the Assessor, the Board of Review, the Property Tax Appeals Board, the Circuit/Appellate Court and the Supreme Court, where he argues vigorously and diligently for fairness and accuracy.
Gary is a past chairperson of the Real Estate Taxation Committee of the Chicago Bar Association (CBA), a committee in which he has also served as the legislative liaison and vice chair. He also serves on the same committee of the Illinois State Bar Association. He has addressed CBA sponsored events on panels, and has spoken to more than 50 neighborhood groups and businesses on the subject of property tax appeals. Gary takes a particular interest in helping these groups to revitalize their business districts and neighborhoods.
